Environmental Science (Geology & Ecology) Summer Camp 2000

July 26-29, 2000

For the High School Graduating Class of 2001

Ø     Examine how the restoration of one Lake Erie marsh has impacted the wetland’s plants, wildlife and aquatic life.

Ø     Hunt for 350-million-year-old fossils in the world famous Silica Quarry.

Ø     Learn how to translate an interest in the environment into a career in the Environmental Sciences.

Camp Participants

High school students from the graduating class of 2001 who have completed high school courses in biology and chemistry and have an interest in environmental science (ecology and geology).

Project Description

Investigate whether a mock chemical spill has contaminated a surface pond and ground water at The University of Toledo’s Stranahan Arboretum.

Students will work in small groups to characterize the geology, chemistry and hydrology of a shallow aquifer at the University of Toledo’s Stranahan Arboretum.  The project will include an examination of water quality.  Students will analyze their results and prepare a computerized group presentation of the study.

During the camp, students also will visit the university’s Lake Erie Research Center  and examine wetlands ecology at Metzger Marsh. There will be an opportunity to search for fossils at the world famous Silica Quarry site.  Finally, students will meet professionals who work in the environmental “industry” in order to learn about career opportunities in the environmental sciences.

Camp Cost

The cost of the camp is $100, and covers all room, board and transportation expenses during the camp, as well as fieldwork supplies and a camp shirt.

Transportation to and from The University of Toledo is the responsibility of the student.  Students, along with two graduate teaching assistants, will be housed in a residence hall on campus that has 24-hour security.  Applications must be received by June 16.  Applicants will be notified of acceptance status by June 23.
