Digital Field Mapping

Todays’ exercises:

ArcView Query

a. Table query

b. Query using graphic

c. Theme-on-theme query (note importance of activating themes and selecting items from themes).

Download and opening image themes: Right click on the link and "Save as" to some convenient location.

Toledo map

Sylvania map

Note: Mozilla did not offer the 'Save target as" option (probably an XP feature designed to force use to use Microsoft Explorer - I have the same problem trying to use Mozilla to open the new My UT Web pages I need to use to post grades).

New themes: make your own points, lines and polygons

d. Adding attributes to the new theme table

e. Editing the shape of your shapefile (vertex edit)

Deliverables:

Same as last week: 2 images (exported from layouts). The first shows results of a Theme on Theme query involving earthquakes and the world map (for example, earthquakes over magnitude 7 within 500 km of Tokyo – please pick your own cities and criteria, null set is not acceptable). The second image shows features traced from the topographic maps you accessed. At least one of each kind of shapefile (point, line, polygon) with appropriate labels should be included.

Feel free to substitute a query and/or a "new theme" application from your favorite study area (or any area you are interested in) in place of materials I provide.

Next week: locating and obtaining GIS resources (imagesand shapefiles) from the Web (the library of free, high-quality material is enormous). We will meet in the same place at the same hour.
