A two-week, field-based course on topical ecology, natural resource management, and sustainable development. Using field activities, discussions, excursions, and presentations by regional experts, students will work with a team of faculty to explore biodiversity in rainforest streams, impacts of road construction of avian diversity in a cloud forest setting, aspects of nature-based tourism, biological indicators of organic farming, and other aspects of tropical ecology. The curriculum includes field trips to tropical lowland forest, cloud and elfin forest, coastal wetlands, riparian systems, an active volcano and a crater lake.

Prerequisites: One semester of ecology and consent of instructor. Course location: Center for Sustainable Development Studies, School of Field Studies, Atenas, Costa Rica (www.fieldstudies.org).

Center facilities include housing, cabins, dormitory, computer room, library, sampling equipment, four-wheel drive vehicles, and a pool. |
