3.  Explain why water is considered a universal solvent for ionic and polar substances.  What would happen if water was a true universal solvent?

4.  Two lakes in the same watershed historically had similar levels of dissolved solids in their waters.  Now these levels differ greatly.  Describe the likely cause of the difference in these trends?
